Santa Maria Valley
Santa Maria is one of California’s coolest winegrowing appellations with one of the longest growing seasons in the world. The San Rafael Mountains in the north and the Soloman Hills in the south frame this growing area drawing the cooler maritime breezes of the Pacific Ocean into the valley. These maritime breezes keep the average daytime temperatures in Santa Maria in the mid-60s. Located in the northern end of Santa Barbara County, with well-drained, lean soils and a Pacific Ocean influence, the region is best known for cool climate grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
